ESOP Update
If you hadn’t heard the news, Zachary’s is in the early stages of transitioning to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This plan will ultimately transfer control and majority ownership of Zachary’s to the employees.

Zach and Barbara (the founders and owners) anticipate that the entire ESOP process could take several years to complete. In the meantime, management and the entire crew will be working hard doing what we’ve been doing for many years already -- making the best, most consistent product that we possibly can; serving you (our customers) in the best way we know how; and maintaining a fun, efficient work environment.

While it’s true that ownership will change, the pizza certainly will NOT. Zachary’s management will remain virtually unchanged and our commitment to excellence will never be compromised.

Zachary’s 20th Anniversary
1983 – 2003

Why IS Zachary’s such a special place to work...?
You might need to ask one of our staff – nearly 80% of us have been here at least two years. Many have been here for a lot more - an incredible feat in the restaurant biz! And while Zachary’s would like to especially acknowledge the members of the staff that have been here the longest, it is really all of us together that make this restaurant tick. So, thanks to everyone for contributing to the success of the company over the years!

Some interesting stats…
Along with Barbara and Zach, the General Manager, J.P. LaRussa, and kitchen employees Mario Martinez and Shaan Fahey have been here since 1983 – 20 years!!

14% of our crew have been here between 15 and 20 years:
Kevin Suto (19+)
Franco Martinez (19+)
Brian Bishop (17)
Martin Arreola (16)
Arturo Rivera (18)
Saeki (16+)
Chris Merritt (16)
Frank Pisciotta (17+)
Paul Hunt (16)
Anselmo Sanchez (15)
Hugo Morales (17)
Megan Arganbright (16)
Pablo Sanchez (15)

29% of our crew has been here over10 years:
Raul Perez (14)
Guillermo Gaucin (12)
Alfredo Perez-Lopez (11)
Jesus Piedra (14)
Sergio Ibarra (12)
Oscar Cabrera (11)
Jesus Corral (13)
Marcos Guerrero (12)
Luis Ibarra (10)
Pancho Sanchez (13)
Thinley Wangchuck (11)
Tsering Sangmo (10)
Victor Munoz (13)
Lodoy Gangshar (11)

Incidentally, as a whole,

  • 36% of our crew has been here over 5 years
  • 60% over 3 years, and
  • 77% over two years.

These stats truly speak to the wonderful work environment fostered by Barbara, Zach, and the entire management staff and crew!

Bye to T.J.
We would also like to send a warm farewell and congratulations to our cherished Theresa Joyce. This December T.J. will be graduating from the California Culinary Academy and we couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments.

Not only was she an exceptional manager here at Zachary’s for nearly nine years, but also her boundless energy and spirit were entirely infectious. Here at Zachary’s T.J. had an unflagging work ethic which inspired us all to take pride in our work. Yet, somehow, she was able to do this while perpetuating a cheerful, fun work environment, AND while being a wife and mother to two beautiful girls. She truly is a unique and irreplaceable individual. We wish her the best of everything. She certainly will be sorely missed.

News Byte from Kathy Vencill
In June 2003, I participated in one of the most phenomenal experiences of my life – AIDS LifeCycle 2. As a group of 1,011 riders, we cycled 600 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles and raised 4.1 million dollars to benefit those affected by HIV and AIDS. It was a particularly emotional journey for me as I often thought about why I chose to do the ride – I had been inspired by an amazing young man, our beloved co-worker Brad Evans, who was tragically killed in a house fire in Oakland on January 28, 2001. (See memorials of Brad located at both Zachary’s stores and also check out: bradevansfoundation.org)

Brad himself had completed the AIDS Ride in the summer of 2000 and to me this gesture represented the strength of his character and spirit with which he lived his life. He had a warm compassionate heart and translated his sense of social justice into action. I wanted to honor his memory by doing this ride. The experience put me in touch with some of the most inspirational, caring, and determined people I’ve ever encountered. And to cap a beautiful trip, it also meant the world to me that his parents, Paul and Scottia Evans, were kind enough to greet me at the finish line in Los Angeles. They truly are beautiful people and I’m looking forward to hitting the road again for AIDS LifeCycle 3 in June 2004!! Thanks to everyone for the incredible support!
