Tribute to Donna Aweeka
Zachary’s artist and Bay Area native

On March 10, 2011 our longtime customer and artist Donna Aweeka passed away. She and her husband Tony have been Zachary’s Art Contest winners six times. We honor her life in these next few months by hanging their Zachary’s art in our dining room at our Oakland location.

She was a bright, sharp woman with a huge heart (and plenty of moxie!). We will miss her yet we are so lucky to have known her. We get to see Tony from time to time, who visits for a veggie slice, a good chat and hugs.

On May 27, 2008 our wonderful rescued mare, Satin's Fancy, presented us with a beautiful black filly...unexpectedly. We named her Satin's Prize, S'Prize for short. Incorporating our horses into our art has always been a joy, and S'Prize seemed like a natural for the Zorro poster. Of course, she is not yet under saddle, but we do have aspirations.

When we began this piece we knew we wanted Zorro on a black horse, hence S'Prize. The rest just fell into place, as art projects usually do. We had a good time with this one, letting it unfold as it developed a life of its own. Tony was the model for Zorro, and a Zachary's pizza box gave us some inspiration, as well as a GREAT pizza.

Had we not procrastinated, as is our usual M.O., we would have been able to complete yet another poster incorporating BOTH horses.

Well, we still have our idea, and hopefully, if we start pretty soon, it will be finished in time for the 2011 Zachary's Pizza Art Contest. In the meantime, we will continue to enjoy more edible inspiration from Zachary's.
