Zachary's Pizza voted Best Pizza in AOL City Guide CITY'S BEST Pizza San Francisco 2006.
Zachary's Chicago Pizza Berkeley
A big winner with its oh-so-addictive deep-dish specialities.
"The world is firmly divided on the issue of Zachary's pizza: Some adore it and some just don't get it. If you're in the latter camp, you probably believe Zachary's isn't pizza at all; with its super-deep crust and California ingredients, it does bear a resemblance to quiche (and the thin-crust version is nothing special).
"But if you do get it, you gotta have it. The thick double crust encloses high-quality veggies (spinach and mushroom is their specialty) and meats (including good Italian sausage) plus cheese, with the top crust covered with tomato sauce -- making an odd-looking but addictive pie.
"You can practically tell time by the length of the line (just past the door, six o'clock on a weeknight; down the block, 8:30 Saturday), but there's a system that lets you order, leave and come back when everything's ready -- or phone in an order for a takeout 'half-baked' pie that you finish yourself at home."
